•"No room at the Inn" — an interesting cliche! During the weekend of 23-24 September we had our seventh annual visit to Ohakune for a ski weekend. A booking was made at a local hotel/restaurant for 12 people for dinner — 8pm on Saturday night. At the time no indication of heavy booking was made to us and no contact phone number was asked for. After the booking was made two relatives arrived unexpectedly at our house and we assumed they would have little difficulty in accommodating the extras in the restaurant. On arrival we were told that the extras would have to leave or we could share our meals with
them. On no account was the chef prepared to cook two extra meals for our visitors. We had to leave the restaurant and we were able to be fed by the Italian Cafe at very short notice. Perhaps we have to believe Jim Bolger that the economy is booming and that this restaurant can afford to be selective. This must reflect on the tourism industry for Ohakune, if this is how tourists are treated.
