Rascals to Christchurch for rugby festival
The Ruapehu Rascals Golden Oldies rugby team left on Sunday 24 September to attend the World Golden Oldie games, being held in Christchurch. The event was attended by 200 teams from throughout the world, 60 of these being from New Zealand and 70 from Australia. Other countries represented included: England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Spain, USA, Canada, Argentina, Hong Kong, Korea, South Africa, Russia, Germany and even one from Oman. Teams played against each other on three days, with an emphasis on fun and respect for each other. Throughout the week
numerous other activities were arranged for all the teams in the Canterbury area. For the Ruapehu Rascals this was their first international tournament. By attending they gained preferential booking to the next tournament in Vancouver in 1997. Twenty members represented the Rascals and they
arranged a colourful banner and uniform to ensure they stood out in Christchurch. All the members were from the Waimarino region and the club wereplaying 'Oldies' rugby for four weeks before the tournament. In true 'Oldies' fashiontheycouldbrag that they were the only rugby team in this area that has never been beaten.
