Ruapehu beats Mainlanders by invitation
St Cuthbert's College won last week's North Island Secondary Schools Skiing Competition with Ruapehu College continuing their winning form gaining second place out of the field of 123 teams. The two teams have been in the top placings for several years running. Ruapehu's Todd Haywood continued his good form and was fastest in the senior mens races. . To add to Ruapehu's glory, the boys team beat all as an invited team at the South Island Secondary Schools Skiing Competition on the weekend at Rainbow. Host college principal Ralph Lane said they were pleased that skiing was available on at least two days, following a disappointing season in terms of weather. Race co-ordinator said the event has now been able to have at least one day's competition for each of the 16 years it has been running. He thanked sponsors Solomon, Minolta, Powderhorn and Junction Ski Shop. "The 1995 Ski Champs will be remembered as a vintage year," said chief of course Rick Knight. "The weather was hot, and the competition was hotter." Among his thanks he
made special mention to the course chiefs Kath Campbell, Suzie Couch, Richard Lindsay, Paul Steiglebauer and Richard Darlow, and also to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts staff who put up with their demands each year and "for
whom nothing is too big a task or an impossibility". Other Ruapehu placings were: Daniel Richards 6th junior mens; Scott Nation 15th junior mens; Darren Triggell 22nd senior mens; and Kaye Murdie 56th senior womens.
