Summer's fun at Whakapapa too

Did you know Whakapapa Ski Area is open in summer? You can enjoy two chairlift rides to a height of 2000 metres above sea level, play in the snow, explore the upper alpine region and appreciate the panoramic views of Tongariro National Park. Lorenz's Bar and Cafe at the Top O' the Bruce is open as is the Souvenir Shop. You can take in lunch at New Zealand's highest cafe — the $2.5 million facility at the top of the Waterfall Express Chairlift, then get away from the lifts and listen to the quiet - it's a different world in summer. Ride, walk and learn — take in the interpretive walk or, for the energetic, there are guided walks to the Crater Lake (once the eruptions have abated). In addition to these on-mountain activities, there is

plenty to do around the mountain as well. Visit the Department of Conservation Park Headquarters and experience the Audio Visual presentation on the formation of this land of fire and ice. Some of the best alpine and bush walks in the country can be found close at hand. Try an easy walk to Taranaki Falls or Silica Rapids, or a serious hike to the Tama Lakes or the Tongariro Crossing. Come back and visit us in summer - it's magic then ^ i

Editor's note: Even if it has to be from a distance to view the eruptions? Let's wait and see.
