Lahar swells Whangaehu
A "reasonably large" lahar saw the Whangaehu River level rise rapidly yesterday morning, with lumps of ice and snow as big as fists floating in the water. The Crater Lake has been gradually quietening down in recent months as part of its usual cycle but a lahar is not unusual in that phase. "We quite often will get a burp or two later on the cooling down phase," said Departmentof Conservation officer Dave Rothschild. He said the activity showed up as "quite large" on the seismograph which is part of the Whangaehu River warning system. The alert status of the Crater Lake area does not change, he said, and remains at Stage T wo which means people should stay away from the lake.
