Police mounted a driver-behaviour operation on the Ohakune Mountain Road on Saturday, aimed and controlling speed, drink-drivers and vehicle road-worthiness and certification. The operation involved Ohakune and Region 3 Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit officers. All vehicles descending the mountain road between 2.30 and 5pm were stopped and drivers passively breath tested, said police. They said only nine drivers failed the test with three subsequently failing a breath screening test although none failed the police evidential breath test. A laser speed measuring device was used on the stretch of road belo w the grader shed. Police said generally speeds were low with most travelling between 70-75 kilometres per hour. However two offence notices were issued to drivers exceeding lOOkm/hr. A number of people were issued offence notices for certification offences. Police said they were pleased with the attitude of drivers, and that the operation was well received by the public. They intend to repeat it. • The Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade and police attended a chr crash on Shannon Street, Ohakune about 1 lpm on Sunday night. A vehicle travelling east collided with another parked on the roadside, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. The passenger in the moving vehicle was taken to Wanganui hospital with moderate injuries. The driver faces drink driving charges. • A Honda TRX farm bike worth $7000 was stolen from a George Street, Raetihi, shed between 9-1 1 pm Tuesday 21 September. • Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat are missing! Thieves took the two wooden garden ornaments from a Manuka Street, Ohakune, property overnight on Saturday 9 September and the owners (and neighbours) miss them. • Police are concerned at a spate of thefts of property from Turoa. Recent thefts include a backpack from the Snowflake Cafe, containing clothing and a cell phone; and a leather back pack containing clothing and jewellery from the Giant Cafe. Police advise skiers to secure their property either by leaving it with another member of their group or locked in their vehicle. • Property in excess of $500 was taken from an insecure locker belonging to a staff member at Turoa on 5 September. • Thirteen bags of coal were stolen from a wood shed in Nei St, Rangataua chalet sometime between 3-8 September. • A Morrison 12-speed racing bike was taken from a Miro St, Ohakune, property overnight 13 September.
