Schoolboy rugby reps rocket to second place

The Rangitikei School Boy Rugby representatives have just ended their season on a very high note after being placed second in the 64th Quadrangular Tournament played at Rugby Park in New Plymouth. The team's build up to the tournament wasn't very successful with losses to Napier 32-0, Central Hawkes Bay 8-7 and Horowhenua 17-5. However, coaches Tony Bartlett and Merv Williams remained confident the boys could do well in New

Plymouth. The first of the four teams the Rangitikei side met was the Taranaki team who proved to be very tough opponents. They cruised away to a 59-0 win over Rangitikei and remained unbeaten throughout the tournament without a point scored against them. Hunterville player Matthew McManaway was awarded player of the day. The following day they came up against the Manawatu team who were favourites for second

place. Rangitikei played a good style of rugby and came away with a 15-5 win. Try scorers were Ivan Hall, Raetihi; Wiremu Tipu, Marton; and Graham Campbell, Mataroa. Gordon Cribb of Raetihi was named player of the day. Wanganui was the final team Rangitikei played with the end result being 39-5 to Rangitikei. Point scorers were Arnold Henry, Ohakune, 2 tries; Ivan Hall, Raetihi; Mason Crowe, Taihape; Jonathon Kui, Raetihi; Reece Morrissey, Ohakune; Mat-

thew McManaway, Hunterville; 1 try each and Joshua Hall, Taihape kicked 2 conversions. Wiremu Tipu was named player of the day. The overall efforts of the team was very pleasing and the youngsters displayed some good quality rugby at the tournament. The final results were Taranaki first, Rangitikei second, Manawatu third and Wanganui fourth. The coaches and team officials would like to extend their thanks to the many supporters and sponsors who helped the team.
