Ski sign set up
Ruapehu Construction Limited staff yesterday erected a replacement for the ski field sign at the corner of Goldfinch and Clyde Streets, which fell down more than 12 months ago. Murray Swan, proprietor of Snowbird Lodge, approached the council about putting up a new sign and was assisted by Alan Geerkens to modify his design to fit council regulations. Mr Swan said he was concerned about the lack of signage for when tourists entered the town that indicates Ohakune is a ski town. "We've got a big carrot, but we needed a big skier too," he said. " On a cloudy day someone could drive through Ohakune and never know that they were at the base of a mountain. If there is a sign, a passer-by might stop, and if they stop they may purchase something, and that's where I see the sign benefiting the local economy." He said Alan Geerkens from the Council had been very supportive of the idea, as was marketing manager Bruce Rollinson. Others contributed towards the construction of the sign including Turoa Ski Resort.
