Snow job
The three and a half metre snow base currently being enjoyed by skiers was the result of some of the heaviest snowfalls seen on Mt Ruapehu in recent years. Nightly snow storms throughout July created havoc on roads in the surrounding area and challenged the sanity of Whakapapa's veteran road clearing crew. Three extra front end loaders were hired for a two week period in mid July to stay on top of the conditions. Five front end loaders and two trucks worked 24 hours per day to keep up. Two of the on-mountaiiy snowgroomers were used to push the snow away from the road-sides ready for the next dump. "It was a very busy month but we're set up for a record season now the weather has come right," said Scott Lee, Marketing Manager for Whakapapa.
