Shearers take on the millers

By

Waimarino shearers and rousies got together with staff from the Tangiwai Pinex Mill for a social fun day of rugby and netball recently. Netball got under way first with the rousies holding the advantage, as most of them play Saturday competition netball. As it was just a fun day no one seemed to care too much about winning or losing — they were there just to be out there doing it and getting into the spirit of things. A long match saw the shearers and rousies take it out with a final score 54-33. The shearers, on the other hand, had a closer game of rugby against Pinex Tangiwai. The bitterly-cold southeasterlies probably spurred the teams on if for no other

reason but to keep warm. Wayne (Gonks) Te Huia put the first points on the board with a penalty kick. Other points went to Fraser Edmonds and Jimmy Edmonds — a try each for the shearers, and Thomas Waara a try for Pinex, with Duane Dixon converting. Marcus Herewini also put points on the board for the shearers, the score at that time 20-7. Nopera Pine scored for Pinex and Mario Mareikura in a No 1 7 jersey ran in for what would have been a brilliant try, but dropped it right under the goal post — the blooper of the day perhaps? Just before half time, Jason Tairoa was sent off, to lots of ribbing reminding him that it was only a social game. Joe Metekingi put shearers out in front with a penalty (32-17). Near the end Nopera Pine went over for another try for Pinex taking the score to 32/22 to the shearers. Thomas Waara missed the conversion for Pinex, Fraser Edmonds using his "bet ya twenty bucks you don't get it over" way of putting the opposition off. People in the running for player of the day were, Net ball: Tweeter Hall in the shearers' team, and Jaqui Condon. In rugby Jim Edmonds, Duane Dixon, Renee TeKura and . the shearers' team. The organisers are talking of asking business house groups, forestry workers and others to participate and perhaps making it a community sports day. Anyone interested is asked to contact Wayne Te Huia or Ronnie Jensen or Missy Edmonds.
