Election race begins

Seven people will vie for the mayoral chain of office for the Ruapehu District Council in the forthcoming local body elections. They are June Baker (sitting councillor); Keith Chapple; Graeme Cosford (sitting deputy mayor); Weston Kirton (sitting councillor); Donald Lawson (previously serving councillor); Joseph Murphy (sitting councillor); and Robert Peck (sitting councillor). Voting opens 29 September and closes 1 2 noon, Saturday 1 4 October. Elections will be held for the councillor positions in Taumarunui, Waimarino, National Park and Waiouru, but not Ohura, where Bill Morrissey and Joe Murphy stand unopposed. Standing for council in Waimarino are Justine Adams, John Compton, Ellen Gould, Bob Peck and Gary Rawnsley. In Waiouru Murray Fitchett, Sue Rodger and Bobby Vine are to contest the two seats available. In the National Park ward Ken Malcolm, Larry Rogers, Eddie Turley and Stephen Leslie Mastrovich will contest the two seats available there. In Taumarunui five places will be contested by eight candidates: Kevin

Amohia, Graeme Cosford, Irene Dempsey, Mark Ebrey, Warren Horo, Weston Kirton, Stuart Shaw and Brett Te Kene. Elections will be held for the places on the Waimarino and Ohura Community Boards but not in Waiouru and National Park. In the Waimarino Ward seven people will contest the six seats available: Alf Alabaster, Doug Bennett, Ray Berry, Robert Home, Murray Hulbeft, Gary Rawnsley and Colin Webb. Waiouru nominations numbered just two: Murray Fitchett and Kerry Harding, and National Park's numbered the required six: Noel Coogan, Warren Furner, Mabel Mathieson, Stephen Mastrovich, Anthony Parker and Michael Petersen. Regional council The only person nominated for the position of Manawatu Wanganui Regional Councillor for the Ruapehu district, Christopher Joseph Lester, is appointed to the position. Elections will be held in all other districts apart from Manawatu where one nomination was received, for Don Linklater, for the one position.
