Waiouru Police File
• On 29 August the ceiling of the Waiouru Railway Station was broken into with the offenders switching off the main power to the back-up generators for the Tangiwai rail bridge. A New Zealand Rail spokesman said the generators run the T angawai Ri ver flood alarm system that warns New Zealand Rail of rising river levels in the event of an eruption such as the one that caused the Tangawai disaster. He said there is a battery back-up so everthing was still operational. • An outside wall and window was damaged at Aldos in Waiouru on the night of 2 September. • Also on 2 September a 18-year-old youth was apprehended and processed for drunken driving and driving outside the terms of his license. Eleven dozen stubbies of beer were confiscated, Waiouru police said. A 17-year-old youth was a passenger in the vehicle and the pair were stranded at Waiouru for nine hours until the passenger was sober enough to drive, police said.
