Council rents air

Two unusual leases have recently been negotiated between the Ruapehu District Council and separate property owners at the Ohakune Junction — leases of airspace above the road reserve. The leases allow the extension of the buildings to encroach above the pavement at the Powderhorn Chateau and the Hot Lava nightclub. Normal pedestrian traffic in those areas will not be affected, advises the council, and the lessees are to provide adequate pavement lighting during darkness hours beneath any area that has been overbuilt. Council chief executive Cliff Houston said the additions to the buildings would "add to the character that is being developed in the apres ski area".
