Health cuts protesters march the Parapara

Last week saw the start of a march from Raetihi to Wanganui down the Parapara to protest at the planned health service cuts which will affect the Waimarino. The number of marchers was small in the somewhat cool weather but there was good support from people seeing them set off. The march was organised by Dr Cresswell, a

house surgeon at Good Health Wanganui, in protest against the many health cuts within the Wanganui and Waimarino region which includes Marton and other outlying rural areas within the Wanganui CHE's jurisdiction. The group stayed ovemight at the Otoko Marae and although numbers were reduced, with some

marchers having to drop out, support was still strong and gathered momentum nearing Wanganui. The marchers joined a group in Wanganui city, then marched to Good Health Wanganui where the march ended. Dr Cresswell and his partner and other supporters have planned to take the protest nationwide.

He said the poor turnout at Wanganui indicated to him that people "don't realise what's coming".
