Under 21s end great first year
Saturday evening last week the Ruapehu Under 21 Rugby Development Squad had their first year's prize giving night, held at the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi. Organisers said both Raetihi and Ohakune Hotel have been more than generous in their sponsorship and tremendous support to the squad, particularly with uniforms. Marty McGrath, the team' s coaeh, opened the evening' s formal part of the prize giving with introductions. He thanked Bob Grave, who sponsored the bus for their trips away. He also thanked Bruce Parkinson the team manager and Rick Harding who worked in with Marty as coach. Rick Harding thanked sponsors: Raetihi and Ohakune Hotel and in particular Trevor, the Raetihi Hotel' s proprietor, who donated trophies. Mr Harding acknowledged Donna McGrath who pushed to have the squad team up
and running. Thanks alsb went to the Raetihi Rugby club' s president, Stewart Haitana and Brett Journeaux who were there representing The Wanganui Rugby Union. The under 21 Development Squad is made up of team members from both Raetihi and Ohakune. This year the team took out the Northern Union Under 21 cup. Congratulations went to the entire team for their tremendous effort as first year players in this division. Top try scorer and top points scorer went to Craig Pye with a total of 17 trys. Most improved player Kerry Windle; most conscientious player Adam Hinana; most valuable player Paul Whale; most promising player Richard Taura; best and fairest Joe Metekingi.
