Wi Rutene wins first race on calendar

The first race on the Whakapapa racing calendar, the Evian Spring Water Slalom ran Sunday 30 July in perfect conditions. National champion Simon Wi Rutene showed his class in the Men's Giant Slalom with a time of 83.4 1 . Todd Haywood placed second with a time of 86.55, with Layton Thompson placing third. Todd Haywood and Layton Thompson are the North Island's top rising young ski racers showing good form for the coming National Championships in the South Island, New Zealand' s top ranked junior Kirsten Stevens won the Women' s Giant Slalom in a time of 90.92, with Erika McLeod and Jemma Brooking fighting out a close race with times of 91.97 and 92.54. All three

women showed ski racing in New Zealand will be held in good hands for the future. All of the top three men's and women' s ski racers are members or currently training with the Whakapapa Race Team. Results: Women' s Open: 1st Kirsten Stevens 90.92; 2nd Erika McLeod 91.97; 3rd Jemma Brooking 92.54. Men's Open: lst Simon Wi Rutene 83.41; 2nd; Todd Haywood 86.55; 3rd Layton Thompson 87.30.
