Taking crafty tums on the lathe

The Dreadnought Mill wood workshop became a classroom last week for a group of T aranaki students. Local artisan Andrew Begg was tutor for the Link course on tuming large wood pieces. The course is the third he has run at the mill, having run two for Ruapehu College pupils. He said it would probably be the last at the old mill as the building was being converted to accommodation, though future courses may be run at a workshop at his home. The pupils, seven from Patea High Schooi and one from New Plymouth Boy s High Schooi, are studying workshop technology, six for Schooi Certificate and two

in the Fourth Form. The Patea High Schooi tutor said he taught small wood turning but it was good for the boys to work on larger pieces and see the skills of another wood turner. Mr Begg said there was a large amount of material in the Waimarino and that it was good to see it put to use rather than being left to rot. He said the timber for the courses was courtesy of Winstone Afforestation's Waimarino Forest, which was clear-felled several years ago for pine plantation. Andrew is showing his work at the Grand Chateau later this month and also at the Lions Den in Arawa Street in the second week of the schooi holidays.
