Train visits from north and south
A special "Day Excursion' steam train visit from Hamilton and a diesel electric hauled train excursion from Wellington are both scheduled to arrive in Ohakune on Sunday 3 September. The two excursions are timed to coincide with the school holidays. The Hamilton-based train will be hauled by Mainline Steam Trust' s locomotive 'Ka' 942 while the train from Wellington, based in Paekakariki, will be hauled by Steam/Incorporated's locomotive 'Da' 15431 which has been restored to its original livery to mark the 40th anniversary of the introduction of diesel - electric locomotives in New Zealand in 1955. While here visitors will be given a choice of activities including a visit to the Turoa Skifields, a visit to the Army Museum at Waiouru, or the Waimarino Museum in Raetihi or a tour of the remnants of the Ohakune - Raetihi branch line for those 'train buffs' aboard.
