Eye on Ruapehu College

rANiA Lumsden

Students were out of classrooms at a variety of destinations during the past two weeks beginning with the group which participated in the Wanganui Secondary Schools Badminton Championships on 19 July. The girls did extremely well and, with a final 6-0 win against Wanganui Collegiate School took first place. The team, comprising D Cranston, E Voon, C Cranston, J Murdie and K Marsh, will represent Wanganui in the regional finals to be played in Wanganui later in August. The boys also did quite well, being placed fourth. History/Geography Visit Sixth and seventh form history and geography students travelled to Wellington to carry out urban and primary research studies. While there, some enjoyed the opportunity of seeing the musical 'Cats'.

In Taihape on Wednesday, Ruapehu students narrowly lost the winter sports shield by five matches to four in the annual exchange against Taihape College. Cultural Exchange A group of Japanese visited from Hidaka, sister city of the Ruapehu District, on Friday 29 July. Te Roopu Mahi a Ringa (the culture group) welcomed and entertained the visitors who later exchanged gifts and toured the school. The tour included a visit to the hall where the Telecom Roadshow was being visited by the junior school throughout the day. A variety of reactions greeted the exhibition of technology which included a bed of nails, a wind tunnel and George, a biological marvel with a very down-to-earth digestive system. Icy mountain roads put paid to a proposed afternoon of skiing, much to the disappointment of both the Japanese and the student guides.
