The campaign to reduce the incidence of cot dea lessened, with this year's Red Nose Day Appeal, on Aueust as imDortant as ever.
The Red Nose Day appeal, now in its seventh year much to raise funds for the on-going work of the C Association and increase awareness of the risk associated with cot death. Dr Shirley Tonkin, National Coordinator for th Death Association, said however, that New Zealan has the highest incidence of cot death in the world - 1 double England's rate and considerably higher thar
tralia's. 'The problem has got better, but it certainly hasi away,' said Dr Tonkin. 'Making sure child minders remember the four factors also continues to be a major part of our j babies being born to new mothers every day, this is a
ing task," she said. The first few months of a baby's life is the time it is at most risk. Most cot deaths (where the baby stops breathing while asleep) occur between three weeks and five months of age. The risk can be reduced though back or side sleeping the baby, not smoking around the child, breastfeeding if possible and ensuring
es to sleep, the baby is put into its own sleeping lother is a smoker. ; Day sports a fresh look, with a new, cuddly
e song clip, and original designs featuring on the
e Cards.
3ular Red Noses will still be available, as will the il noses that appeared for the first time last year outlets. or the first time this year are Red Nose sweets and
ters, which will have real appeal with younger ;upporters. Street parades are also planned for Auckland, N ellington and Chri stchurch. Based on past years, lese should be lots of fun for children of all ages. Red Nose Day is a fun appeal, but most imporintly it raises funds to ensure the Cot Death Assoition can continue its work in reducing the number ibies that die each year from cot death.
