Flight service into Ohakune to be trialed

Several years after the last attempt, another crack at setting up flights into the Ruapehu area is being looked into. A Wellington-based travel industry operator, Chris Keller, is looking at providing small-aircraft flights into the Raetihi Ward's Airstrip from Wellington and Auckland. Winter flights would leave Wellington at 8.00am Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays for the 48minute trip; at 4.00pm on • Fridays, at 10.45am on Saturdays and an extra flight at 1.00pm on Sundays. Judging by the timetable, the flights would continue with the planes then taking off for the 65-minute trip to Auckland. Winter flights from Auckland would leave at 8.00am on Saturday, 10.45am on Monday and Wednesday, and at 3.40pm on Sunday. In summer flights would operate from Wellington and to Auckland Wednesday and Friday; and from Auckland and to Wellington on Sunday and Wednesday. Arrangements are planned to transport people from Wanganui should the Raetihi airfield be closed in the event of bad weather.
