Introducing Waiouru's new nurse

The Waiouru Civilian Surgery has a new practice nurse after the departure of Anne McKay who is now mum to a baby daughter. Brenda Baker takes over as a civilian at the surgery after seven and a half years in the army and just over a year in Waiouru. She has two children aged four and 1 8 months and says she is looking forward to extending the role of practice nurse once she settles in. "I'm hoping once a month to hold a health information talk at the community centre and if I can, get guest speakers," she said. Topics will include cervical screening, immunisation and what to do if a child has a high temperature. Brenda is enjoying working at the surgery and said the only down side is how busy it gets. "The hardest thing I find, because we are so busy, the doctor is booked up a day, sometimes two, in advance. It's hard to say 'I'm sorry we haven't got anything'." "People from Raetihi and Ohakune come here too. We have enough work here for two doctors," she said.
