• Ohakune Police arrested three Auckland youths for the intentional damage of grass verges and playing fields in Ohakune last Thursday, 6 July. The offenders, driving a 4WD vehicle, drove into the grounds of Ruapehu College at around 1 am and proceeded to execute wheelies on the playing field, causing extensive damage to the surface. They then drove to various other locations in the township, including verges owned by the Department of Conservation outsidetheOhakuneRanger Station and the Ruapehu District Council, causing similar damage to these areas. The offenders were located later in the day and ordered to pay reparation for damage caused. They were also required to undertake manual labour at both the college and for the Department of Conservation, in an effort to repair some of the damaged ground.
