Freestyle skiers flip into the Waitemata

Members of the New Zealand Freestyle Ski Team demonstrated some of their tricks in spectacular fashion at the recent Auckland Snow Show by launching themselves off Princes Wharf. There was no soft landing pad either. Just a cold, wet Waitemata Harbour. The demo was part of Subaru's announcement of its support of freestyle snow skiing .

The New Zealand Freestyle Skiing Association will be using an all wheel drive Subaru Legacy station wagon during the winter season. The distinctively painted wagon has a mural of a mountain range emblazoned along its side with the slogan "Go Big or Go Home." This refers to the two jumps freestyle mogul skiers must perform on each of their runs. Competitors need to make big jumps to score high points, otherwise they are wasting their time. There are to be six major freestyle mogul events held over the next four months. The series starts at Coronet Peak on 1 5 July with the finalmeeting at Whakapapa on 7 October.
