Crash cuts current
Power to many eastern Ohakune-Karioi-Tangiwai residents was out until about 3am on Saturday night following a car crash around 5pm near the Makaranui sub-station (see Police File). The car collided with one of the main power feeder poles. Power company staff restored power to parts of the area from an alternative source soon after the crash, but an attempt to feed the area from the town "tripped the Junction", according to King Country Energy representative Bruce Thompson. He said seven staff from Ohakune, Raetihi
and Taumarunui worked in bitterly cold conditions through until 3am when power was restored. The power cut also affected hot water and heating in the whole area. A smaller power cut was necessary on Sunday morning to get switching gear back to nofmal. The faultman's wife fielded many calls through the outage with most being courteous. "But one farmer seemed to think he had the right to abuse the lady - even though she is not even on the payroll," said Mr Thompson.
