Paul Brown and Nathan Ferguson It is Week Six of Term Two and the calendar of events at Ruapehu College is winter-related. Examinations From 8-13 June senior students sat their mid-year exams. All results and comments will be known through reports due for release on Friday 30 June, the start of midterm break. Nga Manu Korero Regional Speech Competition Ruapehu College played host to eight schools from around the Wanganui - Taranaki region for the Nga Manu Korero speech finals on 23 June. Ruapehu students gained outstanding results. Rebecca Clarke was placed third in the senior English section with Brendon Morgan second in Junior English. Pikimai Mareikura won second place in Senior Maori narrowly losing the Pei Te Hurinui Shield which Ruapehu has held for the past three years, to a speaker from Waitara High School whose principal, Mr Harry Cast, was among the large audience. Tomairangi Mareikura achieved first place among all junior Maori orators. In winning the Rawhiti Ihaka Trophy, Tomairangi was the first-time recipient of a newly presented carving. As a result of her win, she and supporters from Te Roopu Mahi Waiata a Ringa (the Cultural Group) will be travelling to Auckland for the national finals in July. It was fitting thafChe Wilson several times a winner in this competition himself should present Tomairangi with her trophy. Interwhanau Winter Sports This afternoon of competitive winter sports was enjoyed by all who participated. Full commitment from teams ensured a high level of achievement in each of the different codes, rugby basketball, squash, soccer and netball. The final results were: Tui first, Kiwi second, Huia third and Weka fourth. Volleyball Every second Tuesday two teams of six volleyball players attack other secondary school teams playing in the

Wanganui competition. Ruapehu are currently placed in the A grade, and along with their coach, Mr D Hynes, are seeking first place. Rugby On Saturday last the 1st XV had a convincing 49-3 win against Wanganui Collegiate. Collegiate could hold their heads high, being the first team to score against Ruapehu in the competition this season. Through dedication, hard work and determination, the

1 st XV have been duly rewarded with promotion, and next round will play first grade in the Manawatu - Wanganui combined competition.
