Occupied Maori land to be rated
Thirty fi ve supposedly unoccupied Maori properties were found to be occupied or farmed in some way in conjunction with adjacent properties or near neighbours, according to a recent survey carried out by the Ruapehu District Council's collection officer. During discussion of a report on Ruapehu District Council revenue collection from 1 July 1994to 31 May 1995, Ruapehu District Councillors heard from chief executive Cliff Houston an explanation of the Turn to Page 5
Maori land
FROMPAGE3 rating position with regard to unoccupied Maori land on which rates are not imposed. In some instances the occupiers were unaware that they were occupying land or grazing their stock on a property on which rates were not being levied. Mr Houston said that it was a matter of general principle. "If it is being used it should be paid for". Accordingly, the person occupying or using the property will be sent a letter stating that, with effect from 1 July 1995, "he or she will be listed as the nominal oceupier and will be sent a rates assessment".
