Newest street takes shape
Ohakune' s newest street is quickly taking shape, with services well on the way to being completed and the first two houses rapidly going up. The development, off Goldfinch Street opposite Wye Street, initially produces four sections but through subsequent stages will include around 20 properties. Surveyor Grant Pope said at this stage the plan would see the street as a cul-de-sac. The developers, Clyde Scott and architect Morton Jordan, plan to carry out all stages of the project including design and organising construction of all buildings, and landscaping. "It should be a really nice little development," said Mr Pope. He said designs for the buildings, while not identical, would follow a theme. They had initially planned to pave the street with cob-
blestones and install fancy street lighting similar to Wanganui' s Victoria Avenue, but that the council "poured cold water on the idea", said Mr Pope. He said council' s reaction was a minor disappointment and that he "didn't push it". "He decided to go for the option preferred by the council, which was cheaper," said Mr Pope. A name for the new street is yet to be approved, but the developers have applied to call it Scott-Barton Place, Barton being Mr Scott's wife's surname. Mr Pope said the development is one Mr Scott had originally planned in 1986. Morton Jordan, a successful Auckland architect, has ties with Ohakune having been brought up in the town as son of the local doctor at the time.
