Squash event attracts out-of--town players
Waimarino hosted an open grade tournament on the weekend at the Squash Club in Raetihi . The club attracted some 40 entrants, both men and women, including competitors from Auckland, Wanganui, Ohakune and Taihape. The competition began on Friday evening and was run over the entire weekend, with the finals on Sunday afternoon. The men's open grade was won by Grant Linton with Rick Cartwill (both from the Royal Oak Squash Club) runner up. Their prize money was $300 and $150 respectively. The men' s di vision one final was won by Darren Triggell Ohakune with Douglas Sattler Raetihi runner up. The women' s division one saw Robyn Pratt take first place with Sarina Marumaru second. James Renata, Raetihi 's president, addressed the club during the prize gi ving, thanked everyone for their support and in particular those who travelled some distances to compete. Currently the club is running a 7-week tournament for the inter-business house and coming up are the following competitions: Town and Country July/August, past and present (members) and the club grade tournament, in August/September. James explained that the club is in good heart and plans are on the board for a junior (primary) and college tournament as an open incentive program to encourage new and younger members to join. For past members (as far back as five years), and potential members subs are being offered at $50, (annual subs).
