Huge photo for ranger station
Ahuge colour photograph of Ohakune Junction and Mt Ruapehu now adorns the wall of the Ohakune Ranger Station, as the first stage in a revamp of the Department of Conservation facility. The photograph is o verlayed to show where the Ohakune Mountain Road runs as well as most of the walking tracks in the southern part of the Tongariro National Park and many of the geographical features of the area. DoC officer Karen Hawke said it will be a great help in explaining to visitors where things are in the park. "People visiting often don't have any idea where things are or where it is that they want to go," she said, "but
this will help us give them areally good idea of where the places are that we are describing to them." The Tongariro Natural History Society funded the $8000 work including the printing of the eight panels of the 4.4 metre by 3.8 metre photograph, taken from the air. The producers of the photo believe it to be one of the largest photo walls in the country. Ohakune staff prepared the descriptive panels which are mounted on top of the photo. The next stage in the redevelopment is to set up a recreational display , showing tramping, mountain biking, hunting and skiing activities as well as a weather board. The last stage will be to redo the section on the history of the park.
