Raetihi dog's win at nationals a popular one
John Journeaux's dog Ben performed in excellent top gear to take out this year's straight hunt title in Masterton recently during the Tux New Zealand National Day sheep dog trails. Ben, at nine and a half years old, did really well gaining the six points needed to qualify, five points for a win down to one point for 5 th place. Many of the dogs ahead of Ben, who ran last, had good runs in the seven-dog final, but Ben took strong control over the sheep and had the best line making steady progress throughout the run. The chance to gain points comes when entering in open club trails leading up to the Nationals. When commenting about Ben's future, Mr Journeaux said that this year was probably Ben's last outing in trailing, however he would see how things went. Judge Grant Calder, from Banks Peninsula, gave nine-year-old Ben, who is to retire, the popular win with the crowd.
