Van plan to save a walk, and perhaps a life
If you are heading for a night out now you won't even have to move the car outofthedriveway — that's the intention of the W aiouru community van which is now up and running from Wednesdays through Saturdays - 5pm til late. The van will pick people up from anywhere in Waiouru and deliver them to the hospitality venue of
their choice. Run on donations, the van's maiden night on Thursday attracted 55 customers not keen on walking or drinking and driving. Organiser Peter Pitts said the next step in the van plan involves recruiting volunteer drivers. "We' 11 be asking for volunteers from the user establishments," Mr Pitts said.
The 'van plan' started as a community initiati ve back in December. Concerned community members along with Waiouru business people representing the Oasis Hotel and motels. the Waiouru branch of the Returned Services Association and the Army Garrison Institute, all donated time and money to establish a service the whole community can benefit from. You can track down the W aioum community van by phoning the Oasis on 3976779 or the RSA on 3876512,
