Bilingualists visit Kohanga Reo

By

Amiria

Teki

Raetihi Primary School' s Bi-lingual class paid a visit to the town's Kohanga Reo recently. It is the first time both levels of Maori learning from Raetihi have got together. The reason for the gathering was basically to share their knowledge and understanding and to experience from kohanga level, the stages of their learning development and unite it with the natural progression of learning at the primary level. Following in the tradition of welcome, there was a powhiri and both groups were accompanied and supported by both their teachers and kaumatua. The first mihi or speech came from young ? aged threeyears. This was followed by a waiata. The second speech on the Manuhiri side (the host family) was also supported by a waiata. Following the end of speeches by the Manuhiri , the visitors then took the opportunity to speak, following the same procedure as the Manuhiri. This gave both classes the opportunity to test the skills they had learnt in the same way they would be used on a marae.
