Transfer station for Karioi

Karioi is to have a rubbish transfer station, with the Ruapehu District Council having started the process of setting up the facility. The proposal to establish a transfer station for Karioi area is part of district-wide strategy to establish a network of transfer stations to replace smaller landfills, said Council chief executive Cliff Houston in a press release. "The establishment of a transfer station at National Park this year has shown that there are many advantages in using a transfer station in comparison to using a small landfill. These advantages include improved litter management, ease of use, a cleaner site, minimal visual intrusion and no discharge to land or water," he stated.

. The Ruapehu District Council has applied for a land use consent for the establishment of a transfer station for the residents of the Karioi area. On granting of the consent closure of the Landfill and construction of the Transfer Station can commence. Mr Houston said the site is currently in a transitional phase. A skip bin has been placed on site and can be used but site establishment including landscaping, fencing and construction and access track will commence on receiving land use consent. The proposed site for the transfer station is at the current landfill site on Whangaehu Valley Road. An additional access track will be created to enable drive-through access to the facility. A

platform alongside the refuse bins is planned to enable easy transfer of refuse to the bins. There will be a change in the type of refuse accepted. Only domestic refuse be put in the skip bins. Mr Houston stated that the following items would be prohibited: garden wastes, chemical or toxic substances, raw meat or offal, bulky objects and liquids in quantities greater than 0.5 litres. Liquid wastes in quantities of less than 0.5 litres, of non hazardous substances contained and sealed within their original container, will be permitted. The lighting of fires and scavenging at the site will be prohibited. Large items, excluding car bodies, will be accepted at Ohakune Landfill.
