Petition calls for Waiouru speed limit drop
A petition of 578 signatures calling for a reduction of the speed limited through Waiouru from 70 kilometres to 50 km per hour was presented to the Waiouru Community Board at their May meeting. The board passed a resolution that the Ruapehu District Council forward the petition along with the board' s endorsement of it to Transit New Zealand for considerajtion. Councillor Robert Vine said he strongly supported and endorsed the resolution. He said the Lions Club had tried unsuccessfully several years ago to have
the speed limited reduced, but because service lanes were in place a speed reduction was deemed unnecessary. Councillor Vine said the service lanes did not go all the way through the township and because of different entrance and exit ways, they are "actually dangerous". He said tourists taking photos of the mountains were also at risk. The petition was started by community board member Margaret Cross out of concern for children crossing the road.
