Steam injected cash into local economy
Three hundred and fifty rail travellers, plus about 100 train chasers , inject around $30,000 into the local economy over the weekend as the second double-header vintage steam train excursion was held. The two trains brought passengers from Wellington and Auckland and many towns in between for the trip, stopping at Ohakune accommodation houses overnight and filling local restaurants. Main Trunk Rail Ohakune representative Graham Parker said the brilliant weather helped immensely, but also "everyone was happy at the way the event was really well organised".
He said last year there were complaints about certain aspects but that tms year all were happy. Thanks to the efforts ofMTRO in bringing the two big players together, the Auckland and Wellington rail preservation groups, the event now looks likely to become an annual outing for the country's true railway buffs. "This particular one really is a steam weekend through and through, recreating the past authentically as possible," said Mr Parker, adding that this was the reason it was so popular with railway buffs.
