Rental accommodation shortage follows boom
The combined effect of more staff coming for a season and the boom in the real estate market in Ohakune is reflected this year in a shortage of rental accommodation. Many properties previously on the market but not selling where available for rent for seasonal staff, but now that they have been sold there is little available for rent. In many cases landlords know they have the upper hand and cases of sharp increase in rent are common. For example a summer rental of $ 1 20 per week can rise to $350 per week in the winter season for a very basic house.
Howeverbeds are so shortthat seasonal workers are prepared to pay high prices. An alternative is to bring a caravan, an option that makes sense for those who want to save money instead of paying it all to a landlord.
