Snowboarders — you're now part of the market
It ain't a passing fad like short fat skis, mono skis or those silly 'para blocks' — "snowboarding has come of age at Whakapapa" — so say skite sheets from Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, so it must be here to stay. "The sport is now acknowledged at Whakapapa as a key part be the market ... and a great way to move down the mountain," says marketing manager Scott Lee. The volcanic terrain at Whakapapa lends itself to natural snowboarding conditions, with lots of frozen wave faces, ideal jump off spots (check your escape route first) and half-pipe-like chutes. Whakapapa' s grooming team — many themselves snowboarders — are building a terrain park and half pipe near the bottom of the Waterfall T-Bar for the 1995 season. There will also be lots of snowboarding events so boarders are urged to keep their
eyes open for Whakapapa' s events calendar. The ski school also has programmes for snowboarders wanting to learn or improve skills and boards and boots are available for hire from the rental shop.
