Soldier skiers help out on mountain

Never mind war games and marching around the parade ground — W aiouru Alpine and Ski Club is gearing up for the ski season ahead. But they are having problems with the weather. Members have organised work parties three times now, but two times bad weather (unfortunately riot snow) has stopped any work being done. The club has negotiated special discounts with Turoa in return for 100 man-days of work which

has to be finished before the 22nd of this month, said club secretary Brennan Wiremu. He said two more work days are planned for 12 and 14 May. Work being carried out includes fitting chairs onto lift cables, building maintenance and rock wall building. People who participate in a work party receive free Waiouru Alpine and Ski Club membership and a free Turoa Card, which offers skiing discounts at most retail outlets in Ohakune and offers skiers the opportunity to participate in three dollar-days skiing during the season. Brennan said the club is negotiating another work day on Turoa after the cut-off date, because of the weather. Between 30 and 40 man days have been worked so far. Meantime other club members have been sorting out the hire gear (and having a bit of a laugh — see photo).
