European-style alpine lodge commands top Ohakune spot
Ahuge timber struc ture reminiscent of European alpine lodges now meets the eye of the travel ler coming off the Ohakune Mountain Road. The 30-room Powderhorn Chateau opens in June to offer a style of luxury accommodation for snow lovers that was not previously available in Ohakune.
The facility is a realisation of many years of planning and development by Paul and Annie Scarf, who started with a ski shop converted from a carrot shipping depot. In 1989 they moved the Carter Homestead onto the site and developed into the unique Po wderkeg Restaurant and bar which very quickly became the centre of apres ski for the Mount Ruapehu region. Following the success of the Powderkeg, they laid the foundations for the Chateau in
December 1993, working through until May this year to complete the building ready for opening on 1 June 1995. Befitting the timber milling past of the Carter Homestead, the building is a study in wood, with huge exposed beams made from whole logs, wood panelling throughout, and ingenious timber constructions throughout including in rooms, the restaurants, stair wells and indoor pool. The rooms are all well appointed, with ensuites with bath and shower (and telephone), queen-sized beds and double sofa bed, telephone with computer modem, television, two video channels and sattelite dish, refrigerator, mini-bar, working desk, tea and coffee making facilities, and their own drying room. Rates which range from $135
ADVERTORIAL to $150 per night includes 24-hour room service. All have air conditioning and heating and 1 4 have their own private balcony. There is a choice of two restaurants and bars with the new Matterhorn upstairs and the Powderkeg Brasserie downstairs, both with open fires and promises of excellent service and food. Also available is a conference room with the latest audio/visual equipment, and a heated indoor pool. Complimenting the Powderhorn Chateau is the Powderhorn Ski & Snowboard shop selling top brands of skis, boots, snowboards and clothing, and renting snow equipment plus mountain bikes and chains.
