Whakapapa-Ohakune connection grows

Whakapapa skiers were once either day trippers or 'clubbies' — those staying in the club lodges on the mountain, plus a few people staying in the limited accommodation available off the mountain. But now the ski field is finding a large proportion of their customers are travelling from accommodation bases in Ohakune. "It's only 35 minutes from Ohakune to the Top O' The Bruce which is only 20 minutes longer than the trip from

Ohakune to Turoa," said Ruapehu Alpine Lifts marketing manager Scott Lee. He said many people have the misapprehension that the Bruce Road is as long as the Ohakune Mountain Road but that it is a very quick six kilometres from the Chateau, while the Ohakune Mountain Road is 1 6 kilometres. Mr Lee said a lot of people are choosing to use Ohakune as their Whakapapa base because it has a good range of night life and alternative activities.
