Water woes still flow
The contractor that built the Ohakune reservoir is to install a new liner in the Ohakune Water Treatment Plant tank, at their expense, following yet more major leaks in the timber tank. » Ruapehu District Council chief executive Cliff Houston said they decided further repair work to the liner was unacceptable, when the major leakage was discovered from the tank on Wednesday 3 May. Installation of the new liner was to start yesterday and Ohakune water users may suffer more inconvenience during the work, stated Mr Houston in a press release.
"However, the new liner should improve the reservoir situation dramatically," he said. An unfortunate feature of having a timber tank in this area is that damage to the liner is possible after an earthquake, the contractor has pointed out. The liner would therefore need to be checked after every major earthquake, they said.
"It is very likely that a concrete reservoir would have improved earthquake resistance. However a concrete reservoir would be a lot more expensive," concluded Mr Houston. .
