Mother's Day has changed over the years

Our celebration of Mother' s Day originates fro an American festival occurring on the second May. It began in 1914, when a lady from Phi whose mother had recently died, looked for a way in wnicn all mothers eould be honoured. Her idea of thanking mothers for their love and care - and just for being a mother - was taken up by the

merchants throughout America who saw the day of thanksgiving to mothers as a commercial opportunity. This led to the custom of visiting mothers, usually with a gift, on that day. Mother's Day has its origins long before the American idea of honouring mothers with presents. Mothering Sunday is a Christian festival held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, which is either in late March or early April, depending on when Easter is held. Turn to Page 8
