Winstone's resource consents and Turoa ski fields, topics for local hui

The Ngati Rangi Trust will be holding a hui-a-iwi this week to discuss a number of issues including Resource Management consent applications from Winstone Pulp International Limited (WPI). Representatives of WPI have been invited to attend so that they may outline their resource consent applications for operations in the Karioi Forest and the Karioi and Tangiwai Mills. The hui is to be held on Thursday 11 May, 10am at Tirorangi Pa, Mangaehu Valley Road Karioi. A key application is for a land-based effluent treatment trial. Other applications cover bore-water, air emissions, gravel extraction, waste disposai and effluent disposal. Many of the activities proposed are within and adjacent to the Whangaehu River catchment. The Ngati Rangi Trust have informed the tangata whenua that this hui-a-iwi is set up through the appropriate channels and is therefore an excellent opportunity to register their position. The consultation catchment is wide with the effected

peoples of Tupoho and Ngati Apa also invited to the hui to discuss the resource consent applications. The Ngati Rangi Trust has noted the open and cooperative attitude that Winstone Pulp International has shown in accepting the Trusts' consultation processes, it was stated in a press release prepared for the trust. "After the resource consent application issues have been dealt with the Trust would like to take the opportunity to provide a forum for the discussion of a number of issues presently before the Ngati Rangi Tribe," continued the statement. The Trust is presently considering a proposal to enter into discussions with a working party arrangement suggested by the Minister of Conservation. With Ngati Rangi laying claim to areas of the conservation estate, including the Turoa skifield, the hui will be an excellent opportunity to canvass tribal opinion. Other issues expected to be given air include proposals for Te Runanga-a-Iwi O Whanganui and developments as regards the Treaty settlement package (the fiscal envelope).
