Residents of an Ayr Street, Ohakune, cottage and two Israeli travellers had a frightening experience Thursday night, about 12.10am, when a V8 Ford Falcon (pictured) drove through the Ayr Street - Miro Street intersection, smashed down a fence and smashed up against the verandah of the cottage. One of the Israelis said he was about to cross Ayr Street when he saw the car travelling at very high speed from the direction of Arawa Street. He said it clipped one of the throat islands and the driver lost control. Fearing that the car was going to hit him, he dashed back out of the way. The car then careered across the roundabout, mounted the kerb, smashed down the fence and into the verandah, causing extensive damage to it and the car. He said the six occupants got out of the car and tried to push the car back onto the road. Because of their "aggressive behaviour" and bad language, the two visitors said they stayed out of sight, still fearing for their safety. Once the men had decided they could not push the car back, they ran off, said the visitors.
