Crater Lake heats up

Ruapehu 's Crater Lake has heated up again, to over 47°C, and there has been an increase in hydrothermal activity with small eruptions reported last Thursday. Department of Conservation staff warn people to go no closer than Dome Shelter and not to camp in the Crater Basin/Plateau area. The eruptions are part of the volcano's

normal cyclic heating and cooling pattern, say scientists. The status of the volcano has changed from Level One (the lowest) to Level Two (the highest is Five) on the national Civil Defence scale which was initiated earlier this year. Observatory staff said that previous cyclic phases would also have led to a change in status, had the scale been in place at the time.
