Price of extra trash goes up
Rubbish bags with the official Ruapehu District Council label on will from now on be the only ones collected by the council's collection contractor. At last week's full council meeting councillors agreed on a range of prices that the council would charge people for extra bags, over the 52 bags allocated to each household. Plastic rubbish bags are to cost 70 cents and paper bags are to cost $1.00. Supermarkets and general stores are also to be approached conceming them selling bags, with a wholesale price to these shops set at 60 cents for
plastic and 85 cents for paper bags. The prices represent increases from 15 cents for plastic and 45 cents for paper bags. The reason for the increase is so that the council can recover the extra cost of collecting the bags and of rubbish dump maintenance brought about by having extra bags put out. Council chief executive Cliff Houston told councillors that the rubbish collection rates that residents paid covered the collection and disposal of 52 bags plus the cost of the
bags and that it was fair that if someone wanted to put out more bags they should pay for the extra use of the service.
