College to host speech contest
The regional finals of the annual speech competition, Nga Whakataetae o nga manu Korero o nga Kura tuarua o nga rohe o Whanganui, Taranaki me Ruapehu, will this year be hosted by Ruapehu College, on 23 June. After school finals at each secondary school, finalists in four categories travel with a school supporting party for the competition. Last time the event was hosted here was 1988 and Merrilyn George, regional co-ordinator, is expecting this year to be just as successful as it was then. A hui will be held on Wednesday 3 May at Ruapehu College to begin to organise the event. Any interested community members from contributing areas will be very welcome, said staff.
The event is sponsored by New Zealand Post Primary Teachers Association and NZMEF. The results of the Ruapehu College Nga Manu Korero - Speech finals competition held on April 27 are: Rawhiti Ihaka - Junior Maori section 1st Tomairangi Mareikura, 2nd Marino Akapita, 3rd equal Richard Ormond and Marama Akapita; Sir Turi Carroll - Junior English section lst Brendon Morgan, 2nd Liana Herewini, 3rd Rakaua Winiata; Pei te Hurinui Jones - Senior Maori section lst Pikimai Mareikura, 2nd Decadia Pakinga, 3rd Kararaina Rewharewha; Korimako - Senior English section lst Rebecca Clarke, 2nd Sandra Smith, 3rd equal Georgina Bowley and Misty Smith.
