Baby dies in cottage blaze

Ohakune Police released the name of the baby who died in Sunday night's house fire near Raetihi. He was Jonathon Stuart Pointon, aged six months. Jonathon' s mother, Miranda Pointon, was released from Raetihi Hospital Monday morning and is now recovering at her parent's Raetihi farm from burns to her hands, arms and face. Police and fire service have completed their scene examination and believe the blaze, which virtually destroyed the farm cottage on State Highway 4, 1 5km south of Raetihi and just south of the Ararawa Stream, started as a result of a fault that developed over a period of time in the open fire's chimney. Mrs Pointon woke about 10pm to find the cottage ablaze. She woke and rescued her two older children, a son (3) and a daughter (5), but flames drove her back from Teaching Jonathon. She suffered bums to her hands, arms and face in her attempts to rescue the baby.
