Lunchtime last Friday saw students, their parents and friends together with pupils and teachers from Ohakune Primary School being rocked by the college entry for the 1995 Smokefree Stage Challenge — a challenge to blend an original and exciting theme with rock music, costume and dance into a stage performance. For the second year students have taken on the challenge, this year with a more active role in putting forward ideas for themes, music, dance movements, costumes, props and lighting effects. With the help of Mrs Campbell, Ms Gibson, Mrs Knight and Mr Lewer all ideas were discussed and tried out until 'Evolve It' was produced in its final form.
Evolve It is a dance sequence which aims to depict the evolution of life, beginning with the creation of Earth through to a funky tribal period, to a chaotic and self-destructive modern world dominated by business. The sequence culminates in the re-birth of life. College pupils have also produced an Evolve It T-shirt which, along with jeans, will be the uniform for the trip to the regional finals in Palmerston North on the night of Monday 24 May. The 40 committed students involved may have tired going over the same steps again and again but knew it would make them more polished in the end. "Even though we would like to win, that is not our main aim," said participants. "Our main aim is to have fun and over the past 10 weeks we have succeeded in that."
